Measles, rubella, mumps

Measles, mumps and rubella are seemingly normal childhood diseases. These “traditional” diseases are extremely dangerous for children. They do have consequences and can affect health in adulthood.

Measles virus is transmitted by airborne droplets. It occurs against a background of high body temperature of 39°C, which is accompanied by a cough, runny nose and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eyes. Rashes gradually appear all over the body in the form of white dots. The risk of the disease is in complications afterwards such as otitis media, pneumonia, lesions of blood, convulsions and encephalitis. Even after the disease ends without apparent complications, the child may develop a condition of immunodeficiency.

Rubellaoccurs at an early age as a disease of moderate severity with high temperatures up to 38°C, with a rash, enlarged lymph nodes in the back of the head and behind the ears, headaches and intoxication. Rubella is dangerous in pregnant women because of the high probability of affecting the fetus. Complications are rare but  encephalitis may develop.

Mumps is considered to be one of the causes of male infertility.Mumps affects the nervous system, parotid, submandibular glands and salivary glands. Mumps can cause inflammation of the pancreas, and inflammation of the membranes of the brain and rarely, meningoencephalitis. Mumps is dangerous because of frequent complications in the reproductive system. Boys and men suffer from inflammation of the testicles, and girls and women have inflammation of the ovaries, which can cause infertility.

A specific antiviral therapy for measles, mumps and rubella does not exist, and the only effective remedy is timely routine vaccination.

At the Immuno-C Vaccination Center, comprehensive vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella is conducted with the Belgian drug Priorix. When using it, there is a low frequency of occurrence of local reactions such as burning, stinging pain during or within 30 minutes after injection and redness and swelling at the injection site. Priorix may be used for revaccination of adolescents and in cases of emergency prevention of measles and mumps for those in contact with the patient. Among the possible light side effects are temperature, a slight malaise and cough. In most cases, vaccination is painless and well tolerated in children.

On the possible contraindications against vaccination, consult your child’s doctor or pediatrician at our medical center , carefully read the Tips for parents  and guidance on  preparing to vaccinate , as well as the section  Frequently Asked Questions  where you will find answers to your concerns.
